KINDERGARTEN AWARENESS-RAISING ACTIVITY
The goal of our kindergarten activities is not only to promote the integration of children with special educational needs, but also to develop the social competence of their kindergarten peers. With the help of owners with various disabilities and their assistance dogs, we focus on the following elements, taking into account age-related characteristics:
– interactive assistance dog presentation,
– what sports can owners and dogs play together (e.g. agility, frisbee, ball herding),
– showing interesting tricks with dogs (e.g. pat, spin, reverse, make a sound on hand signal),
– playful experience: petting, feeding, walking the dog (e.g. how to relate to an assistance dog), playing hide-and-seek with the dog.
During our presentations, preschoolers are usually the most open, asking questions honestly and boldly. In our experience, parents often avoid meeting people with disabilities out of tact due to incomplete information. Based on this, we believe that a preschool program can greatly help spread the idea of tolerance.
