Presenting the situation of people living with various difficulties through their assistance dogs allows for an open approach, which is particularly important, since the concept of disability is often treated as a taboo by society. In the interactive training, we will present through our own experiences:

• how assistance dogs make their owners’ everyday lives easier,
• what accessibility means for our mobility, hearing and vision impaired colleagues,
• what assistive devices are used by people with different disabilities,
• how others can help them,
• what are the differences and similarities between types of disability,
• Despite our diversity, we live in a common world and society.

What does it mean to be a volunteer at the NEO Assistance Dog Association? 

A cohesive community, good mood, learning and development opportunities, team spirit. At the NEO association, volunteering does not mean an 8-hour job, but a completely voluntary, unpaid activity. You have the opportunity to join the basic activities of the Association, so you can contribute to the training of assistance dogs with your work, you can help us at events, or you can make yourself useful in the association’s background work. The trainings and events are held at external (usually Budapest) locationsare implemented (e.g. Lurdy House). 

Volunteering starts with a six-month introduction. After that, if you like our Association’s mission, values, and we mutually believe thatfits into the team, then at the end of the six-month program, after a motivational interview, you will become a contracted volunteer of the association. With the contract, we will officially seal our cooperation.  

During the motivational interview, we have the opportunity to report on the experiences gained during the introductory period and give feedback. We can make a decision on the specification of further volunteer operations, and we have the opportunity to map the candidate’s long-term motivation. (The age limit for applying to volunteer is 18 years)

 

How busy does this mean? 

 The cooperation is completely voluntary, and occasionally involves a few hours of work. For us, this is a profession, we are very grateful for your help, and in return, we are happy to involve you in the mysteries of assistance dog training, you can gain insight into the joyfulinto our moments,our successes and our difficulties. 

 

What can you help with? 

• You can be present as a helper during training sessions (e.g. when training therapy dogs, we need a “stranger” and a “crowd” for certain tasks so that the dog gets used to new stimuli). 
• Event assistance/stall) 
• Assisting the team in fundraising activities (these are actually outings to shopping malls): building and dismantling equipment, informing interested parties 

• Accompanying our visually impaired colleagues and providing car transportation if necessary 
• Translation work (mainly translation of English and German professional materials) 
• Video recording of exam material during exams 
• Professional photo and video production 
• Administrative work: helping colleagues writing applications, implementing background work 

• Research work: e.g. collecting assistance dog regulations, what regulations they operate under in which country, etc. 
• Participation in campaigns: sharing information about assistance dogs 
• Captioning: captioning reports for hearing impaired people 
• Graphic work 

• IT tasks 
• Communication volunteer: sharing Facebook postsEtc.

I would like to have my own dog tested as a therapy dog, what do I need to do?

The therapeutic exam consists of 2 parts. A temperament test, and then a practical exam in the client group after the appropriate practical time has passed. This takes approximately 1 to 1.5 years.

Our association runs a temperament training course once a year in the spring. The registration requirements for the temperament training course are:

• voluntary contract with our association
• obedience exam (BH exam level)

The application process for individuals (for individual therapy sessions) and institutions (for group therapy sessions):

1. Please write a letter.palfy.panni@gmail.comto your email address!
2. We will send you an application form, which we ask you to fill out.
3. Then, a personal meeting takes place, needs are assessed, and details are discussed.
4. The individual/institution and NEO MSKE conclude a cooperation agreement.
