School awareness-raising activity

The aim of our program is to contribute to the acceptance of people with disabilities and to promote equal opportunities for them within the framework of a joint educational session by our speakers with hearing, vision and mobility impairments. Within the framework of the program, we organize visits by farmers with various disabilities and their service dogs to public institutions and educational institutions, and during such sessions we introduce students and interested parties to various types of disabilities. The aim of our awareness-raising program is not only to promote the integration of people with disabilities, but also to develop the social skills of school children (e.g. acceptance, helpfulness, empathy, cooperative skills), personality and community development. We strive for variety and to take into account different needs: the methods of our special lesson include interactive and situational games, small group discussions, the opportunity to try out assistive devices, a joint team-building session with a four-legged “referee” (e.g. paraagility obstacle course), and students can also see a short assistance dog presentation. We have built this service on our own experiences. Every year, members of our association receive more and more invitations to give presentations about their condition and personal fate in public education institutions. The results of our research, based on the processing of 253 questionnaires, have shown that our attitude-shaping program has achieved a spectacular change among school children: after the thematically structured session with our assistance dogs, the number of responses reflecting a positive attitude has increased significantly, while those with a negative content have decreased.
