THERAPY ASSISTANCE DOG TRAINING

The therapy dog works together with its owner, the two of them visit groups and help implement developmental sessions. The dog’s handler works closely with the group’s (therapeutic) teacher, thus implementing more effective development. There are two branches of dog therapy, visits and developmental therapy sessions. In the former, the dog visits the group, but does not have a specific task. In the latter, the dog actively participates in the session, performing various tasks.Physical assistance:For the group members, completing sometimes boring or difficult developmental tasks becomes a pleasant experience if they have to be implemented with a dog. It is important for the dog to listen to the group members (not just its owner), so it can complete the tasks together with them (e.g. choosing the right colored ball, completing an obstacle course together with the children, with the leash in the children’s hands, etc.). The dog and its owner help to keep the lesson going together. The use of therapy dogs is very diverse, from motor development to reading and learning, a well-trained dog can help in all areas, and the target groups are also diverse, from early development to the treatment of psychiatric patients to nursing homes, a therapy dog can be used anywhere. In the two-stage exam, the dog and its owner prove that the owner is able to control the dog in a stimulus-rich environment and that the dog does not react aggressively to any unexpected situation.Spiritual help:The group members develop a close emotional bond with the dog, so this work comes with a lot of responsibility – removing the dog from the group overnight can cause serious trauma for the children, so anyone who undertakes such work should not suddenly leave the group. The effectiveness of dog therapy is due to the fact that the dog accepts the group members as they are, works with them despite their limitations, and the children can finally control someone (since until now they have always been told what tasks to do, now they can also give the dog tasks).Application processfor future therapy dog handlers:
